Clery Act
Personnel & Authority
The University Police Department Chief is a full-time employee and an
Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certified officer with law enforcement,
investigation, and crime-prevention experience. The Chief reports to the
Executive Director for Student ServicesVice President for Student Affairs. The Department employs nine full-time
ILEA certified police officers. University of Indianapolis police officers
have arrest powers and are qualified in the use of firearms and other
certifications. In addition to the sworn officers, the University has
student cadets for special events, building security, foot patrol, and
escorts. Student dispatchers are used for police radio communication.
The University Police Department provides round-the-clock safety and protection
service for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Officers are charged
also with enforcing city-county ordinances, Indiana statutes, and university
rules and regulations on campus.
Campus Security Authority
When a threat to students and/or to employees
exists, the appropriate, timely notice of the
occurrence of these crimes shall be made to
students and employees by means described in
the Timely Notice paragraph of this
document. The reportable crimes are Criminal
Homicide, Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter,
Negligent Manslaughter, Forcible Sex Offenses,
Nonforcible Sex Offenses, Robbery, Aggravated
Assault, Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft, Assault
With Injury Motivated By Bias, and Arson. Also
reportable are those students arrested or referred
for disciplinary sanctions for Liquor Law Violations,
Drug Law Violations, and Illegal Weapons Possessions.
In addition to the campus police, the following
individuals, who have significant responsibility
for student activities, are responsible for
forwarding reports of crimes to the author of
this report for inclusion in this report and
for purposes of placing the campus community
on alert for the threat of repetition of these
crimes.

These persons are capable of assisting and
are willing to help students and other members
of the University community in making crime
reports to other police agencies having jurisdiction,
such as the Indianapolis Police (IPD).
Enforcement
The University of Indianapolis retains the authority
to monitor and sanction any criminal activity
engaged in off-campus by students of the university.

Relationship with Local Police Agencies
The University Police Department enjoys a close,
cooperative relationship with the Indianapolis
Police Department and Marion County Sheriffs
Department. The campus is in the south district
of the IPD patrol district, and the university
uses the Metropolitan Emergency Communications
frequency for police radio communication. The
university has its own FCC licensed radio frequency
for other police communications.
University
Police have primary responsibility for on-campus
service and enforcement runs and making initial
crime reports. Assisted by university officers,
IPD and the Marion County Sheriffs Department
retain follow-up investigative responsibility
for crimes against persons on campus. All 911
emergency calls are responded to by city police,
EMS, and fire department personnel.
Crimes against
property, except for vehicle theft, are investigated
by University officers. When stolen property
is identifiable, reports are made also to the
appropriate IPD or Marion County Sheriffs
Department property recovery units.

Alcohol and Drug Policy
Please refer to the Univesity policy on the
possession, sale, and use of alcohol and/or
illegal drugs in pages 48 and 53 of the 2006-2007
Student Handbook. Additionally, Indiana state
statutes pertaining to the possession, use and
sale of alcoholic beverages will be enforced.
Federal and state laws pertaining to the possession,
use, and sale of illegal drugs will be enforced.
Reported Crimes
The University publishes and distributes this
report on a yearly basis to faculty, staff,
students, prospective students, and employees.
Statistics are gather from crimes reported to
the University Police Department and crimes
reported to the Indianapolis Police Department.
All crimes are categorized by using the Uniform
Crime Report of the Federal Bureau of Investigation
standard. Sex offenses are categorized per FBI
National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
standards. Also, crimes reported to those person
in the campus community with primary counseling
responsibility are reported to the author of
this report by the submission of a number only
for statistical puprosed by the counselor. The
report by the counselor is voluntary and of
a confidential nature. This document is published
and distributed to accomplish compliance to
the Clery Act and the 1998 Amendments to the
Act.
