Clery Act: Crime Info

Crime Reporting
Persons who are victims of a crime on campus are urged to report the crime by calling 788-3333. A police officer may be dispatched to help and/or take information for an official report. Campus Police officers can also be immediately contacted by activating one of the six emergency callboxes placed on campus. The locations are Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, Cory Bretz Hall, Schwitzer Student Center, Nicoson Hall, Cravens Hall, and University Apartment Courtyards. All callboxes are on the exterior of the buildings and marked at night by a blue light.

Official reports are made also to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department or the Indianapolis Police Department unless the investigation has no significance outside the campus community. Reports are not forwarded when stolen property has no serial numbers or other identifying features or in matters involving campus citations for university parking or vehicle operation violations.

Timely Notice
Notice of the occurence of crimes in the ten categories listed in this site are sent to the University of Indianapolis community through the University e-mail and the posting of crime alerts on bulletin boards in the common areas of the campus buildings. In addition, notice of crime trends for all reported crimes of repetitive nature and of a continued threat to the community are published within one business day of the crime and/or identification of the crime trend.

Daily Log
Campus Police maintains a daily log of the date, time, location, case report number, and disposition of all crimes filed with the Department. This log is public record. Entries and updates are made in the log within two business days. The initial log is maintained for sixty days. Requests for data beyond sixty days will be provided to the requester within two business days.

Sex Offenses Information
The university is committed to maintaining an environment supportive of its primary educational mission and free from exploitation and intimidation. It will not tolerate sexual assault or other forms of nonconsensual sexual activity. This policy is supported for students, faculty, and staff through educational programs, counseling, and medical services. The University enforces the policy via internal disciplinary and grievance procedures and encouragement of external prosecution through appropriate judicial avenues. Offenses covered under this policy include any sexual act directed against another person forcibly and/or against that person’s will, or not forcibly or against that person’s will where the victim is incapable of giving consent due to his/her youth or temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity.

Victims of sex offenses are encouraged to report the offense as soon as possible after the incident. Persons on campus who are prepared to provide information about assistance, resources, and options for action available to the victim are the Counseling Center Staff, the University Nurse, and the Chaplain. A student or other campus member may report a sexual assault to the University of Indianapolis Police Department or Indianapolis Police Department, or the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. A report can also be made to any campus security authority as listed in the previous section of this document. A University of Indianapolis police officer can be contacted by calling 788-3333. The sexual assault victim is advised not to change clothes, shower, wash, or douche after the assault so that physical evidence of the crime is not destroyed. The victim of sexual assault is advised that the reporting UIPD officer will make arrangements for transportation to the hospital for a medical exam and for the gathering and preservation of physical evidence of the crime.

Complaints against enrolled students will be forwarded to the Office of Student Affairs for resolution within student conduct code procedures. During the student conduct code determination process, the accuser and accused have the right to have others present during disciplinary hearings. The accuser and the accused will be notified of the outcome of a campus disciplinary proceeding.

The University offers assistance to campus-related victims of sex offenses; services available are counseling, advocacy, assistance in locating medical and legal help, and follow-up care. A victim’s academic and living situation will be changed upon request if reasonably available.
